Standing in My Character's Shoes -and- How Many Pairs of Shoes Does a Girl Need in LA?!

Last week, I heard GREASE's Pink Lady Dinah Manoff give a talk, "Stand in Your Character's Shoes." It was more than a talk, really, because she successfully pulled a bunch of writers out of their shells to explore and further understand their protagonists by using acting exercises. It was enlightening! Plus, Dinah is super fun so the time passed much too quickly!

Martha Schoemaker, one of my fabulous critique partner
s, went with me.

Martha, Dinah, and I

Dinah spoke at a Field's End Roundtable. Field's End is a writers' community that's near and dear to my heart. Click here to read Dinah's amazing bio (scroll down to or click on July) and to read more about the Field's End Roundtables.

Speaking of things writerly and heart-worthy, SCBWI's Summer Conference is July 30th - August 2nd! Squee! Jim cashed in his airline miles and hotel points to send me! (Have I mentioned lately how much I love that man?!) So while next week's post will be delayed, it will be worth waiting for. Bloggy buddy
Molly Hall and I are teaming up to bring you Molly and Dawn's Excellent Adventure!

Molly and I got together last week to hang out, discuss our trip to L.A., and try to solve the age old question: is it possible to bring too many pairs of shoes? We didn't plan to wear matching jean jackets, but I'm taking it as a sign. It means we're both going to sign with awesome agents this year. (It might just mean it was a cool night and we both happened to grab light jackets, but let's not go there. Positive energy, people.)

So! Who else is going? I'm from L.A. County, but I've never been to this conference! If you've been, do you have any tips for us?
Also, when is the last time you saw GREASE? Have you heard about the sing-along version?

I'm so excited for you - and a little jealous. Not too many conferences out my way in small city Canada :) I hope you have a ball!

And I'm sure you've interpretted the sign correctly!

Yay! Woo hoo! L.A., here we come!!!

FYI, I watch Grease on a regular basis and can sing every song! SUCH a great movie! If I went to the sing-a-long version I would HAVE to fine a pink satin jacket to wear...
Speaking of things to wear.. you really*can't* have too many shoes for a sunny California conference. If only the airlines didn't have a weight limit on our suitcases... Is that really necessary? ; )
SO excited for Molly & Dawn's Excellent Adventure!!1

Thanks, Jemi! I hope you get to go to a really cool conference soon! Regarding the sign, I'm glad you don't feel I was drawing illogical conclusions. ;)

Molly (aka, my partner in crime), I love the movie too! And Dinah is so adorable in it! Regarding the shoes, I agree! California, here we come!

Can't wait for you to blog about the L.A conference, Dawn! I have never been there myself, but have heard only good things about it. You and Molly have a wonderful time!

And, yes, signs like the ones you mention can only mean that awesome positive things are ahead :).

Jealous! Wish I could go to the conference...and in answer to your question, NO! You can never bring too many pairs of shoes!

How awesome that you get to go - have a great time!

I visited my sister's family in Dallas for a week this summer and brought two pairs of shoes. She visited us a few weeks later and brought 6 pairs of shoes. So, I guess it just depends on how important shoes are to you. :)

Wow...the jean jackets were just meant to be. And the only way to bring too many shoes is of you can no longer fit your notebook and a pen.
Have fun! I can't wait to hear about it!

Kelly, I bet you'll get to that conference soon! You've been the Queen of Travel this summer. :) I loved your pics. Your NY trip looked amazing!

Diane, Molly and I will try and bring the adventure home to everyone! And you're in New York--how cool is that?!

Stephen, it'll be so fun! Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!

Lydia, I hope you get to go to the L.A. conference next year!

Hema, you are so fun! I'm glad you read signs the same way I do. ;)

Beth, I wish you were going too. I wish you all were! Regarding the shoes, phew! Thanks for answering! :)

Susan, I think you're right. :) I honestly am not a true shoe girl--I wear the same few pairs most of the year, and (*gasp*) I like comfortable shoes. But there's something about conferences or other events that allow me to dress up even a tiny bit... The shoes I'm wearing Saturday night might be slightly painful, but OMG, they're so cute!

Faith, hee! You're right! Thanks for the happy energy!

Sharon, woo-hoo! Thanks! :)

The jean jackets are totally a sign of future agents! Naturally. :)

Oh Dawn, I'm so excited for you!!!! I went to the 2009 conference in NYC, and it was AMAZING. I can't wait to read all about your experiences. Have a wonderful time!

I loved Grease too! Hope you have an amazing time at the Conference - I've never been!

Yay! I so look forward to seeing you both in a couple of days. Wheee!

Okay...shoes! You can not have too many. Personally I feel I do not have enough. That said, I do recommend flats for the the poolside gala. Heels sink in the grass and become difficult for dancing. Because YOU MUST DANCE! :)

Dawn Simon said...

Samantha, I know, right? ;)

Thanks, Amy!

WritingNut, thanks! We'll tell all about it and try to bring home the experience!

Jolie, I'm totally looking forward to seeing you too! Thank you for the tip! I'm now rethinking my Saturday night shoes...

I've heard great things about that conference but have never been. I can't wait to hear all about it! And no, it's impossible to take too many shoes. ;-)
